Federal, state and local partners engaged in the national PSN initiative have available to them a wide variety of no-cost training and technical assistance support. Access to the PSN-related services of each of the organizations listed below is available through the U.S. Attorney's Office PSN Coordinator (for state and local agencies), and through the FEAT Points of Contact at the Department of Justice (for PSN Coordinators).

Provider:	Academy for Educational Development
	The Academy for Educational Development (AED) is an independent, nonprofit organization committed to solving critical social problems and building the capacity of individuals, communities, and institutions to become more self-sufficient. AED has developed a series of media and communication courses to help task forces build internal and external media outreach capacity. Designed to encourage participants to transfer newly learned skills back to their colleagues, these courses consist of brief presentations, small and large group discussions, case study teamwork, and hands-on practice.

Provider:	American Probation and Parole Association
	The American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) is made up of individuals actively involved with probation, parole, and community-based corrections in both adult and juvenile sectors. APPA was awarded a grant to involve probation and parole professionals in the Project Safe Neighborhoods effort. The first step in this involvement is to ascertain current practices of probation and parole organizations in preventing supervised offenders from possessing and using guns and in searching for and seizing guns held illegally. In addition to developing training and technical assistance opportunities, APPA will work to promote proactive enforcement of existing gun law regulations.

Provider:	American Prosecutors Research Institute
	The American Prosecutors Research Institute (APRI), of the National District Attorneys Association (NDAA), is a nonprofit research, training, and technical assistance resource for prosecutors at all levels of government. APRI staff is available to provide technical assistance to prosecutors involved with community gun violence and drug cases. APRI regularly updates its database of programmatic information from around the country. Information on promising gun violence prevention strategies and topics relating to drug crime is gathered and organized so it can be accessed easily and incorporated into APRI's training and technical assistance programs. APRI also continues to build its database of prosecutors and other allied professionals involved in gun violence and illegal drug reduction initiatives. This database allows APRI to easily communicate with prosecutors about PSN and innovations in the field.

Provider:	Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
	The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), U.S. Department of Justice, enforces federal laws and regulations relating to alcohol, tobacco products, firearms, explosives, and arson. ATF's Office of Training and Professional Development has designed a comprehensive package of training and training aids to support the PSN initiative. As part of this package, ATF distributed to every field division a CD-ROM containing PowerPoint presentations and lesson plans on topics such as firearms identification, tracing, and legal issues and gun violence. The CD-ROM was developed to assist ATF field offices in delivering uniform training to state and local law enforcement in support of the PSN initiative.

	COSMOS Corporation has been awarded grants from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to provide training and technical assistance to communities implementing its "Partnerships To Reduce Juvenile Gun Violence Program," and to develop the resource publication, "Promising Strategies To Reduce Gun Violence." Delivery of technical assistance may consist of 1) one-on-one consultations by telephone or e-mail; 2) on-site training workshops; 3) analysis of data transmitted to COSMOS; or 4) on-site planning group meetings.

	Hobson & Associates is a professional law enforcement training and consulting service founded by a veteran career law enforcement officer. Hobson & Associates works closely with key representatives of selected judicial districts to provide a comprehensive and effective regimen of training. Designed primarily for law enforcement officers, the training teaches techniques for handling crime gun cases from initial detection and recovery, through the investigation and processing of both the criminal defendant and the firearms evidence toward a successful prosecution.

Training:	Community Engagement Technical Assistance Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) Anti-Gang Training
Provider:	International Association of Chiefs of Police
	The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) provides no-cost technical assistance to the law enforcement community to help improve their illegal firearms interdiction and prosecution efforts. IACP provides site-specific, regional technical assistance sessions to support the PSN initiative. Through IACP’s Illegal Firearms Interdiction Technical Assistance and the Project Safe Neighborhoods Enforcement Training, IACP strives to help participants produce strategic plans that, when implemented, will reduce the level of gun violence within their communities. IACP’s technical assistance project, which is made up of eight different sessions, is offered in small group forums, held at IACP headquarters for law enforcement commanders and investigators, and offered as multi-regional site symposia around the nation.

	The School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University (MSU) has developed an approach to training and technical assistance based on a set of core themes central to PSN. These themes focus on using research to identify the nature of the gun violence problem and formulating a strategy to address the most critical aspects of the problem. MSU has provided training in strategic problem solving to task forces from 93 districts. Specialized issue-focused training has also been provided to 91 districts.

	The primary mission of the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) is to enable people to create safer and more caring communities by addressing the causes of crime and violence and reducing the opportunities for crime to occur. NCPC offers training, technical assistance, and a national focus for crime prevention: it acts as secretariat for the Crime Prevention Coalition of America, more than 4,000 national, federal, local, and state organizations committed to preventing crime.

	In 1997, the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) created a network of Regional Community Policing Institutes (RCPIs) to provide comprehensive and innovative community policing education, training, and technical assistance to COPS grantees throughout the nation. The RCPIs are a network of 31 partnerships of local law enforcement, education, and community groups that provide training and technical assistance on issues related to crime and quality of life. Since 1997, the RCPIs have trained almost 300,000 people how to confront a variety of problems in their communities by using skills and activities such as problem solving, strategic planning, community involvement, and crime prevention through environmental design. Several RCPIs are helping implement the PSN initiative.
