  • 2006 PSN Achievement Awards
    The Department of Justice recently recognized 15 recipients of National Project Safe Neighborhoods Achievement Awards during a ceremony held before the PSN national conference's 1,300 attendees. Awards were given for the following: outstanding mass media campaign, exemplary local training program, outstanding local prosecutor's office, outstanding overall partnership/task force, outstanding individual contribution to a gun crime task force, innovative prevention strategy, outstanding local police department involvement, and outstanding gun crime investigation.

  • Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales Highlights Achievements Under Project Safe Neighborhoods and New Initiatives on Combating Gang Violence
    At the Project Safe Neighborhoods National Conference in Denver, Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales acknowledged the accomplishments PSN has made in combating gang violence and reducing gun crime, and announced the release of $30 million in federal funding to support the continuing anti-gang effort. The Attorney General also announced two PSN public service announcements, “Sounds of Gun Crime” and “Time Served,” which will be distributed to English and Spanish language radio stations.

    This guidebook addresses ten aspects of media outreach: PSN and the media, getting media exposure, maximizing messages and materials, customizing your media program, making the Internet work for you, developing other outreach tools, choosing effective professional help, evaluating efforts and refining your program, resources, and tools and templates. It also identifies key players in television, radio, and print media.
  • Project Safe Neighborhoods: Strategic Interventions - Chronic Violent Offenders Lists—Case Study 4
    BJA-Sponsored May 2006. This case study explains tips for identifying chronic violent offenders, methods of constructing a most violent offenders list, assessing the validity of information, and communication of this information. Also included are tips on the integration of chronic violent offender lists with parole operations, prosecution, probation and parole, and other initiatives.
  • Project Safe Neighborhoods: Strategic Interventions - Crime Incident Reviews—Case Study 3
    BJA-Sponsored May 2006. This case study describes the history of the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, as well as its partners, training, and outreach. It explains the origin and goals of crime incident reviews, the roles of key players, and the process involved, including planning and preparation, presenting the case, analysis, and dissemination. This case study also includes key factors for increasing the success of incident reviews.
  • Project Safe Neighborhoods: Strategic Interventions - Gun Prosecution Case Screening—Case Study 1
    BJA-Sponsored May 2006. This case study describes the history of the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, as well as its partners, training, and outreach. It outlines the roles of U.S Attorneys, local and state prosecution, local law enforcement, federal law enforcement, research partners, and probation/parole in the gun case review process, as well as criteria for choosing cases, and factors that influence the success of the program.

    BJA-Sponsored May 2006. This case study describes the history of the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, as well as its partners, training, and outreach. It explains the background history of offender notification meetings, the goals of such meetings, and the partners involved, as well as the participation, message, and follow-up involved in an intervention.

    BJA-Sponsored May 2006. This handbook describes the histories and accomplishments of Project Safe Neighborhoods program in 92 districts throughout the United States. It discusses various partnerships with the PSN initiative, ways in which PSN has affected various U.S. communities, and future PSN efforts.
